On Friday, December 1st there will be an assembly in the auditorium from 12:30 to 2:00 regarding the many thoughts and opinions students have on Confederate symbols.  Students will miss periods 5 and 6 to attend this event.

The Social Studies department put out a survey to get students’ questions about symbols of the Confederacy, and according to department chair, Zack Powers, “There were about 280 responses that were submitted, and that’s when we decided to have the UMPI professors come and talk to students, so that they can answer the questions and concerns that students have on this controversial topic.”

The UMPI professors coming to speak are: Dr. John Zaborney who specializes in the history of slavery, Dr. John Defelice who studies American history and Political Science, and Kim Anne Perkins,  a social work professor.
