In the first Presque Isle varsity basketball game in over 11 months, the Wildcat girls certainly had a level of rust to shake off, but when it mattered they came through and handed the Shires their first loss of this young season.

The game opened up in Houlton’s favor, gaining a four point advantage in the first few minutes before the Wildcats were able to find their stride and take control of the game, securing the lead five seconds into the second quarter on a basket by Rhylee Kinney and not relinquishing it for the rest of the contest.

They were able to widen that margin to as much as 11 at one point, but the Shires would not go away that easily, managing to claw back to a two score deficit by the end of the first half.

That lead for the Wildcats would be the same at the final buzzer, as they improve to 1-0 on the season with a 52-48 win while Houlton falls to 1-1.

Junior Faith Sjoberg led the team with 26 points on the night, including 6 three pointers, Kinney scored 11.

“I thought that we played really good tonight for it being our first game,” Senior Hattie Bubar said after the win. “We all played good together as a team.”

The Presque Isle Girls play next this Saturday at home against Caribou, the game will begin at 12 noon.
