2021-22 School Schedule Student Survey
Students’ opinions differ on the topic of next year’s school schedule.

The decisions regarding the school day schedule for next year are up in the air. Currently, we are doing the 4-period accelerated block schedule. This limits the amount of hallway transportation and number of close contacts in the instance of a positive COVID-19 case. But what about next year? Many students would prefer the same 4-period schedule, but there are a few who would rather return to the normal 7-period schedule.
According to the results of the recent Student Council survey, with 250 respondents. Seventy-seven percent of students would like the 4-period block next year. Reasons for this are things such as better grades, less homework, and less stress. A response to the survey said, “The four period block has so far led to the best grades I have had throughout all of high school. I by far prefer this because I think it gives the teachers a chance to actually teach their lessons and not have to rush through them to fit into the short 7 period classes.” Another response was, “It’s less homework for the students with just four classes, which is always a pro.” Jaylee Howlett ‘23 said, “I would like the four period schedule next year because it allows me to get more credits. I think administrators should consider the same schedule for next year.”
On the other side, there were some students who do not prefer the 4-period schedule. A main reason is difficulty with figuring out classes that fit in the schedule. Forty-eight percent of respondents were required by Guidance to take a class that they did not sign up for or had little interest in. A response to the survey said, “I like the four period set up, but it has caused problems with a lot of students’ schedules because they were forced to take a class they didn’t need or want to do, just because they needed a place to go.” A student also responded, “I think it might be better to go back to the 7 period system. I primarily want this schedule back because I would like to take Chorus all year, and with the four period system, I was unable to.” Faculty and students alike recognize that this year’s schedule, while seeming easier, causes educational concerns. English and World Studies teacher, Mike Waugh said, “I think there have been positives and negatives. My biggest concern is if students are getting the long term practice they need for certain skills, but I do like how less stressed the students are.”
