For the second day in a row, a Presque Isle squad made the trip up to Fort Fairfield, and once again, they left the gym victorious.
The Wildcats offense came out of the gate a little rusty, having two starting seniors inserted back into the lineup after a three game absence. But a scoring boost off the bench midway through the first quarter allowed them to find their stride around the basket, and from there shots began to fall across the lineup and a lead started to mount.
18 bench points from a trio of Julianna Morningstar, Courtney Kane and Sadie Lapointe gave their team an 11 point lead headed into the break, but the Tigers would not go away that easily, bringing it back to a two possession game as the third quarter came to a close.
That margin would remain the same until nearly the halfway point of the fourth, where the Wildcats would be able to extend that lead back into double digits. But it would be their defense rather that would seal the deal, holding Fort Fairfield to a measly two points in the final eight minutes to close out the game as they improve to 7-0 on the season with a 42-32 win.
Eight players chipped in points for Presque Isle in the win, led by Morningstar with 8, all in the first half, while four of her teammates put up six on the afternoon.
“As a group we are trying to adjust to having our whole team back,” senior Jenna Sargent said in her return to game action Saturday. “The dynamic seems to be different now, but in the end we were able to come together to get the win today.”
The Wildcats will hit the court again in just two days time, as the Fort Kent Warriors come to town for their first game of the season.
