Civil Rights Team

Olivia Sanchez, Staff Writer

Kayla Sharp ‘20 is an ordinary girl who loves civil rights and wants to make a difference in the school. So she joined the Civil Rights Team advised by social studies teacher Mike Waugh.

“The ideal Civil Rights member is a student who identifies and tries to help with things in our school that involve our personal civil rights, which include our culture, race, religion, etc,” Sharp said.

They meet at least once a month depending on Mr. Waugh’s schedule. They sometimes meet in the morning or after school. Anyone can join.

“This is really important to me, and it gives me an opportunity to try and help our school be a better place,” Sharp said. She hopes that others will join and want to make a difference as well.

Joining the Civil Rights Team means getting involved with the school and trying to make it a better environment for everyone in it. They want to make an impact and try to address the problems and issues in the school. Once a year they meet with all the other Civil Rights Teams in the state of Maine. This year they are meeting in Augusta.

The Civil Rights Team is taking part of in an upcoming event dealing with the symbols of the Confederacy. This will take place  in the auditorium on December 1st from 12:30 to 2:00 and it will be a school wide event. Three UMPI professors are going to discuss what they think about symbols of the Confederacy, such as the flag and statues. A survey was sent out to all students to poll for any questions that could be answered.
