A “capitol” experience. The PIHS Youth in Government delegation has a moment to enjoy being in the presence of the Maine State House. This was the 80th annual Youth in Government weekend in Augusta. “It wasn’t all what I expected,” Emerson Miller ’26 said. “It wasn’t as serious as I assumed, because there were some funny bills that made it a good time.”

On Friday November 10, the Presque Isle Youth in Government delegation traveled to the Augusta State House for a weekend of legislation. Mr. Albair is the adviser of the Presque Isle group of 11 students who attended the trip. Students went through a variety of parliamentary procedures to pass student-written bills that go through the same process as bills that go through the state legislature.

This was the program’s 80th anniversary. Not only did students pass bills, they expanded their knowledge of public speaking, debate and courage for standing up for what you believe in. “It is important for students to speak up on topics that we feel passionate about, because it will start positive discussions that could lead to positive changes in society,” Eli Mosher ’26 said.

For anyone interested in joining the group or participating in the club, find Mr. Albair in room 219 for information.
